Afro-Caribbean Colombian Percussion Workshop 🎶
Date: Saturday, September 27
Time: 2:00–3:30 PM
Location: Casa de Español
Led by Andrea (PercuFlora)
About the Workshop
Andrea will teach the principal and basic elements of the Bullerengue. Bullerengue is a traditional Afro-Colombian musical genre and dance originating from the Caribbean region of Colombia and Panama. Rooted in African and Maroon heritage, it is characterized by call-and-response singing, powerful drumming, and expressive dance movements. Historically, Bullerengue has been a form of resistance and cultural preservation, passed down primarily by elderly women in their communities.
Andrea will share the power of this rhythm as a bridge between heritage, community, and self-expression.
What you will learn and experience
In this workshop, Andrea will begin with a brief introduction to the cultural context of Afro-Caribbean Colombian music, then guide participants straight into the fundamentals of traditional drumming techniques.
You’ll have the opportunity to play a variety of percussion instruments, including hand drums, bombos, claves, and shakers. By the end of the session, we’ll come together to create a simple musical arrangement that includes an intro, base rhythm, variations, and outro, accompanied by a short call-and-response song.
Together, we’ll build a Rueda de Bullerengue—a traditional circle of music, rhythm, and voice rooted in community and celebration.
