Maria Harrington

Owner and Adult and Youth Spanish Instructor

Born in México and raised in the Sacramento area, María completed her degree in Spanish Studies at Holy Names University and later earned a master’s degree in Latin American Studies at UC Berkeley. Since finishing her master’s thesis on the cultural and linguistic changes experienced by indigenous peoples of Chiapas, México, María formed a small organization called Help Chiapas to bring educational resources to Ignacio Allende, a rural village in northeastern Chiapas. She has also traveled to Spain, Puerto Rico, Guatemala and the Dominican Republic.

For the past twelve years, María has been dedicated to fostering love and appreciation for her heritage language and the many Spanish/Latino cultures. She first taught K-5th grade Spanish at Montclair Elementary in Oakland, then worked as an adjunct Spanish professor at Holy Names University, and most recently taught Spanish at Saint Mary’s College High School in Berkeley, where she received the Lasallian Educator of the Year award. She started CASA de ESPAÑOL in 2011 and has received high praise from students for her unique teaching style and student-centered curriculum.

In addition to instructing adults, he has also taught elementary and high school students. He has received excellent reviews for his teaching enthusiasm and techniques both from his students and his peers. Having traveled extensively in Spain and México, he brings a well rounded perspective of both Latin American and Peninsular idiomatic expressions and nuances to help his students understand and appreciate the tremendous diversity in the Spanish language across countries and continents.
